  • Review: Bus

Citizens are busy traveling back and forth between home, work, and the pub. Your mission will be to develop a bus route that allows you to pick up as many passengers as possible and take them wherever they want to go. To achieve this, you will expand your bus line, contribute to the strategic development of the city, attract new passengers, and invest in more and more buses. However, you will also need to reach the pick-up points before rival companies do. Sometimes unexpected events occur: time stands still, and transport demands change completely overnight. Even so, you cannot let this happen too often, as continuous space-time distortion might shatter and collapse the universe.

This is the premise behind Bus, a design by Jeroen Doumen and Joris Wiersinga (Antiquity, Food Chain Magnate). The game was first published in 1999 by Splotter Spellen in a German edition. In 2019, a 20th-anniversary edition was released by Capstone Games. Artwork for the original version was created by Tamara Jannink (Roads & Boats), while the reprint features illustrations by Daan van Paridon and Thijs van Paridon (The Estates, Wildcatters).

  • Review: It’s a Wonderful World

Dear citizens of the 5 Empires! Today is a great day to rejoice, as we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the end of the Great Wars. What a joy to live in a world where every decision made by our wise and charismatic leaders is aimed at the happiness of the entire population! We know it is so! And so we want it to be!

This is how It’s a Wonderful World is presented to us, a design by Frédéric Guérard (Ilôs, GrandBois, Clash of Rage). The game was published in 2019 by La Boîte de Jeu in a French and English edition (the latter co-published with Lucky Duck Games). The illustrations are handled by Anthony Wolff (King of Tokyo, Zombie 15′, Top Fantasy).

  • Review: My City

After a long journey, you have finally reached a new land. Right away, you begin to build and develop a new city. My City is a legacy game, which means that the game evolves over the course of multiple plays. You and your fellow players will have player boards that are modified after each episode. Across 24 fascinating episodes, you will experience the growth and history of your city from its early beginnings to the industrial era.

This is the premise of My City, designed by Reiner Knizia (Tigris & Euphrates, Ra, Samurai, The Quest for El Dorado). The game was published in 2020 by KOSMOS in a German edition. The artwork is illustrated by Michael Menzel (Stone Age, Rokoko, Agra).

  • Review: Azul – Stained Glass of Sintra

After decorating the Evora Palace, King Manuel I of Portugal intends to commission the world’s greatest stained glass artisans to adorn the windows of the Sintra Royal Palace. As a glass artisan, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to demonstrate your exquisite craftsmanship in service to King and country. Will you be the best at creating the most beautiful stained glass windows in all of Portugal?

This is the premise behind Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra, the follow-up to Azul, both designed by Michael Kiesling. The game was published in 2018 by Next Move Games in English and German editions. Chris Quilliams (Coimbra, Clash of Cultures, Azul) was once again in charge of the art.

  • Review: Paladins of the West Kingdom

We find ourselves in a turbulent period of West Frankish history, circa 900 AD. Despite recent efforts to develop the city, the outlying townships remain under constant threat from outsiders. Saracens scout the borders, while Vikings raid wealth and livestock. Even the Byzantines from the east have shown a darker side. As noble men and women, players must gather workers from the city to defend against enemies, build fortifications, and spread the faith across the land. Fortunately, you are not alone. In his great wisdom, the King has dispatched his finest knights to aid our endeavors. So ready your steeds and sharpen your blades. The Paladins approach.

This is the premise behind Paladins of the West Kingdom, designed by Shem Phillips (Noctiluca) and S J Macdonald (Circadians: First Light). The game was published in 2019 by Garphill Games following a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Mihajlo Dimitrievski handled the illustrations, having previously lent his distinct art style to games such as Coloma, Claim, and Viral.
