Review: Container
Introduction & Overview
An economic game that tests players’ strategy to build and operate a simple supply chain. The objective of each player is to earn the most money by producing, selling, and transporting containers. It may sound simple enough, but there is a twist: you can never buy or transport your own containers! Instead, you must entice other players to buy your containers and take them to Container Island. At the end of the game, each player adds up the cash earned during the game plus the cash value of the containers in their scoring area on Container Island. Your secret value card determines how much the containers in your area are worth. The winner is the player with the most total money!

This is how Container is presented to us, a design by Franz-Benno Delonge (Manila, TransAmerica) and Thomas Ewert. Kevin Nesbitt collaborated on its expansion. It was first published in 2007 by Valley Games, Inc. in an English version. In 2018, Mercury Games published the 10th Anniversary Edition which included the expansion. And in 2026, Allplay published a new edition. The illustrations for the first edition were done by Mike Doyle, those for the 10th Anniversary Edition by Michael Christopher, Paola Tuazon, and Andrew White, and those for the Allplay version by Adam Allsuch Boardman.
It is not published in Spanish, so you will have to resort to import or second-hand markets (the game is completely language-independent). It allows for games of 3 to 5 players, with a suggested minimum age of 12 and an approximate length between 60 and 90 minutes. The MSRP for the Allplay version is €35.95. For this review, a review copy of Mercury Games’ 10th Anniversary Edition was used.

How to Play
Container is an economic game in which players take on the role of entrepreneurs dedicated to the production, transport, and trade of maritime goods. The game plays out over an indeterminate number of turns where players alternate taking actions. At the start of their turn, the active player must pay interest to the bank if they have any loans. Then, they can perform two main actions from a choice of four options: produce containers using their machines and set their price in the factory store, purchase containers from other players’ factories to place in their port warehouse, buy new machines or warehouses to expand capacity, or sail their ship. When sailing, players can move their vessel to an opponent’s port to buy containers from their warehouse or head to the Island. Arriving at the Island triggers a blind auction where other players bid on the ship’s cargo; the active player can either accept the highest bid (receiving the cash from the highest bidder plus a bank subsidy of equal value, effectively doubling the payout) or reject it and keep the goods by paying that exact amount to the bank themselves. Containers acquired on the island are placed in the buyer’s area for final scoring. The game ends on the turn in which two of the five container colors are exhausted from the general supply. After this, secret value cards are revealed, cash is tallied, unpaid loans are penalized, variety bonuses are applied, and the container color with the highest count in a player’s area is discarded due to market saturation. The player with the highest total capital is declared the winner.
Key Concepts
Let’s begin with the core element of the game: the Containers. These are pieces available in five different colors. In the game, they act as the primary commodity produced in factories, sold in port stores, transported on ships, and auctioned on the Island to generate value and income at the end of the game.

At the start of each game, players receive one of the Container Value Cards. These indicate the cash value that each of the five container colors will have for that player at the end of the game, determining which types of goods will be most profitable to store on the Island—keeping in mind that the player must discard all containers of the color they hold the most of on the island.

The Island Board is placed in the center of the table within reach of everyone. It serves as the final destination where players sail to auction off their ships’ cargo and store them in their personal scoring sections.

Meanwhile, the Container Ships are used to navigate open water (which is all the table space between boards) to reach opponents’ ports, buy goods, and transport up to five containers to the Island for auction.

Factories represent container production machinery and come in five different colors. Players can build them on their player board to produce new containers matching the machine’s color and expand the storage capacity of the factory store (each machine allows for two containers to be stored in the factory store).

On the other hand, Warehouses are constructed in the port section of a player board. Their function is to increase the storage capacity of the port store (not to be confused with the factory store), allowing one additional container to be stored and offered for sale for each warehouse built.

The Player Boards are split into two main sections: the factory area (bottom) and the port area (top), from the player’s perspective. They organize purchased machines and warehouses, set sale prices in stores via numbered spaces, dock opponents’ ships, and store the secret value card. It is important to note that prices can only be changed when containers are added—either to the factory store (by producing) or to the port store (by buying from an opponent’s factory store).

Money is represented by cards of various denominations. It is used to purchase machines, warehouses, or containers, receive payment for sales or subsidies, bid in auctions, and determine the final cash total to name the winner. To have something to display in blind auctions, each player receives two Bluff Cards showing a value of $0. These are used alongside cash cards during blind auctions to hide the true value of a bid from rivals or to submit zero-cost bids.

Loan Cards represent $10 debts taken directly from the bank. They grant immediate liquidity in exchange for interest payments at the beginning of each turn and reduce total money during final scoring if left unpaid.
Finally, the Investment Bank Board, along with the Payment Card and Broker Card, form the components of the investment bank. The board features spaces for three brokers with their containers and cash; the arrow card points to whichever broker or space is currently up for bid, and the payment card serves as a physical tray to place bids of money or containers when calling a broker.

Setup
- Place the island board in the center of the table within reach of all players.
- Count out a specific quantity of containers, machines, and warehouses to form a general supply for each component type based on player count:
- 3 Players: 12 warehouses, 2 machines per color, and 11 containers per color.
- 4 Players: 16 warehouses, 3 machines per color, and 14 containers per color.
- 5 Players: 20 warehouses, 4 machines per color, and 17 containers per color.
- Form decks with the money cards to create the bank.
- Each player receives $20 (five $1 cards, five $2 cards, and one $5 card) and two $0 bluff cards.
- Place loan cards near the bank.
- Each player chooses a color, takes the corresponding player board, and places it in front of them with the port area facing the center of the table.
- Any open space on the table not used for another purpose is considered open sea.
- Each player takes the ship of their color and places it in open sea.
- Each player takes 1 warehouse from the supply and places it on the free space in their port area.
- Take 1 machine of each of the 5 colors from the supply and place them in the game box lid. Randomly, each player draws 1 machine and places it on the free space in their factory area. Return excess machines to the supply.
- Each player takes 1 container from the supply matching the color of their starting machine and places it on the $2 space in their factory store.
- Shuffle the 5 container value cards and deal 1 face-down to each player, returning any left over to the box without looking at them. Each player secretly checks their card and keeps it face-down on their board.
- Randomly select a starting player.
We are ready to begin!

Game Flow
A game of Container takes place over an indeterminate number of turns, starting with the first player and proceeding clockwise.
On each turn, the active player proceeds as follows:
- Investment Bank Resolution. If the player holds the investment bank payment card, they win the broker auction. The player claims the reward (cash goes to their hand; containers go to their personal port space on the investment bank board). Then, they pay their bid by distributing cash or containers space-by-space across the 3 brokers, starting at Broker I and moving down.
- Pay Interest. If the player holds any Loan cards, they pay $1 to Broker I (for 1 loan) or $1 to Broker I and $1 to Broker II (for 2 loans). If they cannot pay interest (even after taking a new loan if they haven’t hit the 2-loan limit), they default. In this case, they pay what they can, and the Bank repossesses one container per unpaid loan (in order: Island, ship, Investment Bank personal port, Port Store, or Factory Store), removing them from the game.
- Actions. The player performs 2 actions chosen from the following list (they may repeat an action twice, except for Produce Containers).
After this, the turn passes to the next player.
At any point during their turn (or even outside of it), a player may take a Loan from the Bank to receive $10 immediately, up to a maximum of 2 loan cards. Likewise, during their turn (after paying interest), they may pay $10 back to the Bank to settle and remove a loan card.
The available actions are:
- Buy a Machine or Buy a Warehouse. The player pays the bank the cost shown on the next empty spot of their personal board (Factory Area for machines or Port Area for warehouses). Buying a machine allows producing more containers and expands factory store capacity (up to 2 containers per machine). You cannot buy a machine in a color you already own. Buying a warehouse increases Port Store capacity (1 container per warehouse).
- Buy Containers for the Port Store. The player can buy any number of containers from a single opponent’s Factory Store, up to the maximum capacity of their own Port Store (1 per warehouse). The factory owner cannot refuse to sell. Pay the listed price per container directly to the seller and place them on the price spaces ($2 to $6) of your Port Store. As part of this action (or as a standalone action without buying), the player can adjust prices on all containers currently in their Port Store.
- Produce Containers for the Factory Store (limited to 1 time per turn). The player pays $1 to the player on their right (the Union Boss). Take one container from the supply for each machine color owned and place them on the price spaces ($1 to $4) in the Factory Store, up to the limit of 2 containers per machine. If no containers of a given color remain in the supply, that machine does not produce. As part of this action, the player may adjust prices for all containers in their Factory Store.
- Sail the Ship. The player moves their ship from one zone to another (an opponent’s Port, the Island, the Investment Bank Personal Port, or Open Sea). Each movement between zones costs 1 action. Depending on where the movement ends, proceed as follows:
- If ending at an opponent’s Port, they can buy containers from that player’s Port Store at the listed price and load them onto their ship (maximum 5 containers per ship). The owner cannot refuse the sale. You cannot visit or buy from your own port.
- If ending at the Investment Bank Personal Port, they can collect containers previously won in Bank auctions to load onto their ship.
- If ending at the Island, a blind auction immediately triggers for the ship’s entire cargo among all opponents, ending the player’s turn right away (even if an action remained). All other players secretly make a bid using their cash cards (they may use $0 cards to hide larger bids). After revealing bids simultaneously, the active player chooses one of two options:
- Accept the highest bid. The highest bidder pays their offer to the active player and receives the containers, placing them in their section on the Island. Additionally, the active player receives an equivalent amount from the Bank as a government subsidy.
- Reject all bids. The active player must pay the Investment Bank an amount equal to the highest bid (placing dollars one-by-one across each broker). In return, they keep all containers on their ship and place them in their own area on the Island.
- Call the Broker (1 time per turn). A player cannot perform this action if the game will end on this turn or if they just resolved the “Win Broker Auction” action. Proceed as follows:
- If the Payment card is free, the player places the broker arrow card pointing to a broker space they wish to bid on (Containers or Cash), takes the Payment card, and places their bid on it. If bidding for cash, deliver containers from your Factory or Port; if bidding for containers, deliver cash cards.
- If another player holds the Payment card, the active player can outbid them by making a strictly higher offer (at least $1 or 1 container more). The outbid player reclaims their bid items (and can readjust prices for returned containers for free).
Game End
The game ends at the conclusion of a player’s turn after the general supply of at least 2 container colors has run out (if an active Investment Bank auction remains unresolved at game end, the player with the payment card claims it immediately).
Before proceeding to final evaluation, each player reveals their container value card and checks which container color they hold the highest quantity of in their Island area, discarding all containers of that color. In case of a tie for the highest quantity between multiple colors, the player chooses which one to discard—unless one of the tied colors is the variable value color ($5/$10), in which case that color must be discarded.
After this, each player adds up:
- For each container on their side of the island, the value indicated on their value card ($10 per container of the variable value color if the player retains at least one container of all 5 colors on the island, or $5 per container if they do not have all 5, taking discarded containers into account).
- Cash in hand.
- $2 for each container remaining in their port store.
- $3 for each container loaded on the player’s ship.
- $3 for each container stored in the Investment Bank personal port.
- Deduct $11 for each loan card the player still holds.
The player with the most total capital after this tally is declared the winner. In case of a tie, the tied player with the most containers in their factory store wins.
Variants
Without the Investment Bank. Simply omit the investment bank board, payment card, and arrow card; the corresponding action is unavailable. Payments for keeping your own cargo go directly to the bank.
Price Adjustment. In the Allplay edition, adjusting prices on your personal board is allowed as a main action.
Repossession for Default. In the Allplay edition, if a player cannot pay interest, instead of removing their containers from the game, they are moved to the investment bank’s auction lots.
Short Game. During setup, place 9/11/13 containers of each color for 3/4/5-player games.
Personal Opinion
The premature death of Franz-Benno Delonge in 2007 left a massive void in the international gaming scene. Cancer deprived us of a designer in full creative maturity who had already gifted us fascinating works like Manila (here is its tocho-review), Big City (here is its tocho-review), or TransAmerica (here is its tocho-review). Who knows what designs were left on the drawing board? Delonge possessed a unique sensibility for crafting organic market dynamics out of astonishingly clean systems.
Right in the year of his passing, his final design was published—the very work before us today. A title that served not only as an involuntary farewell, but over the years has grown into one of the most widely discussed games in the hobby. Let us proceed then with the analysis of Container, a design of unquestionable audacity that continues to trigger heated debates at the gaming table and showcases the brilliant way Delonge understood closed economies in board games.

Container puts us in the shoes of global logistics moguls managing the entire production, shipping, and distribution chain for cargo containers from start to finish. What makes this approach so interesting is that it eschews grand narratives and artificial flair to focus on the cold reality of a pure free market. Each player operates as an independent corporation within a system, striving to optimize costs and maximize profits in an environment where product value is entirely speculative.
At a mechanical level, we find a turn structure offering a choice of two actions: produce goods, build factories or warehouses, buy containers and place them in the port, haul containers from opponents’ ports, or unload them at the island.
The economic engine revolves around interdependency among players, as you cannot buy your own products or dock at your own port. Every financial flow stems from direct transactions with opponents: to load containers onto your cargo ship, you must dock at rival ports and pay their set prices. And to list containers in your port for others to buy, you must have previously bought them from rival factories—again, at whatever price they set.
The objective is to transport these containers to the island, where each player maintains a personal area to stack their acquired cargo. These containers do not have to be transported directly by the player who ends up with them; every time a cargo ship arrives at the island, a blind auction is held among the remaining players. The ship owner then decides whether to sell to the highest bidder—taking that cash from the rival alongside a matching amount from the bank—or keep it themselves by matching that high bid (returning that money to the bank).
The game concludes when two of the five container colors run out in the general supply. The winner is determined after tallying cash and evaluating goods stored on the island based on a secret card that dictates the value of each color. However, the design includes a cruel twist: each player must discard all containers of whichever color they hold the highest quantity of on their island, heavily rewarding diversification to mitigate that penalty. Whichever player holds the most capital after repaying bank loans claims victory.

And that’s all there is to the rules! Let’s talk about feel, dynamics, and quirks. Container is a design that inspires fascination thanks to its closed market—a concept that produces feelings both thrilling and disorienting. By forbidding self-consumption and forcing trade with opponents, Delonge ensures that economic tension is palpable from the very first turn. There is a mutual reliance where pricing goods isn’t just a math problem, but an ongoing exercise in psychology. Fine-tuning margins to look attractive without handing away free value to rivals creates a tight, organic flow where every bill changing hands visibly shifts the balance of power.
The mechanism regulating monetary flow is, without a doubt, the cornerstone supporting the entire architecture of the game. We are dealing with a closed economy where circulating money fluctuates based on transaction direction. When players pay the bank to build machines or warehouses, or choose to reject bids and buy out their own cargo, they are directly draining liquidity from the system. Conversely, money enters the system when island auctions settle successfully between rivals, triggering government subsidies. Managing this flow is vital to keep the game from suffocating.
Furthermore, price setting in Container is paramount and requires a learning curve paved almost entirely by trial and error. Players must grasp how speculation works while gauging global table liquidity. Setting sky-high costs at the factory or port stalls the supply chain and strangles your cash flow, but selling dirt-cheap enriches opponents who load up their ships and complete island auctions. Knowing when to squeeze margins, induce opponent purchases through bargain prices, or orchestrate an artificial shortage are sophisticated speculative levers that reward visionary play.
This concept of speculation can be tough to digest, especially given the impact of rigid margins where starting minimum costs are low compared to construction costs. In early plays, players almost inevitably fall into the trap of systematically overpricing goods in both factories and warehouses. Attempting to maximize individual profit without understanding capital circulation brings the economy to a screeching halt. This steep learning curve harshly punishes mistakes, forcing the group to realize that steady cash flow trumps short-term greed.
Understanding this principle is crucial to avoid ruining the experience, because Container‘s economy is ruthless. If players inflate prices and freeze trade, circulating cash plummets until the table is choked out. If ships don’t sail to the island to spark bids and inject vital state subsidies, liquidity evaporates. Falling into a financial collapse—where buying or producing becomes increasingly difficult—yields a crushing sense of frustration, proving that the design demands shared responsibility to keep its economic motor alive and competitive.

Once the group gets these dynamics and capital starts flowing smoothly, Container reveals itself as one of the most fascinating and elegant economic games on the market. Delonge’s genius lies in how a handful of straightforward, atomic actions trigger a living macroeconomic simulation of immense depth. Every single decision impacts the table’s financial ecosystem immediately, creating a constant, rewarding tension where commercial cunning, margin calculations, and reading opponents’ intentions lead to unforgettable moments.
This need to keep money circulating is tied directly to board reading, which is critical throughout the game. Because each player holds a secret value scale for container types, production and buying priorities are dictated by those cards. Analyzing what machines opponents build, what goods they stock in their warehouses, and how often they send their ship toward rival ports or the island lets you deduce their financial motives. Identifying these invisible synergies is essential for anticipating moves, tailoring your supply, and avoiding inadvertently feeding your biggest competitors.
In the end, the goal is to amass maximum capital, making every ship’s arrival at the island a high-stakes moment. As a buyer, you must calculate on the fly the net return that cargo lot will yield toward your final score before placing a blind bid. You have to mentally balance your secret scale, evaluate the risk of over-concentrating a single color, and weigh the liquidity you’re sacrificing. A miscalculation during a blind bid can wreck your cash reserves or hand a massive windfall to an opponent.
Equally, if you’re on the other side of the table as the ship owner, looking at the highest bid presents no small dilemma. You must coolly evaluate whether it’s better to accept the opponent’s cash plus the juicy bank subsidy for immediate liquidity, or reject the offer, pay that amount out of pocket to the bank (removing cash from the game’s economy), and keep the goods. Absorbing that cost is an aggressive play that denies monetary injections to opponents, but requires surgical precision to avoid drowning in debt during the endgame.
I mentioned earlier how crucial it is to understand the global economy to make a game satisfying. Even so, mistakes are often inevitable. That’s precisely why Mercury Games’ 10th Anniversary Edition introduced the Investment Bank. It acts as a solution designed to smooth out the stiffness of a closed economy without compromising the core design. The Investment Bank acts as a dynamic financial buffer that injects or drains liquidity and cargo as the market requires, lowering the risk of economic collapse that loomed over early plays of the base game. By introducing brokers and new negotiation pathways through broker actions, the system expands business opportunities, giving less experienced players viable lifelines (offering containers for cash or vice versa) without stalling global cash flow.

It’s hard to name direct alternatives to an economic game built on such straightforward concepts. But Alma Mater comes to mind (here is its tocho-review), which creates a similar dynamic through its textbook trading system, even if it comes wrapped in far more eurogame paraphernalia typical of Italian design.
Regarding scalability, the game shines brightest at five players. That is the player count where the financial ecosystem achieves perfect organic balance, since with all priority cards active, demand for all five container colors remains balanced. While functional at four or even three players thanks to supply adjustments, competitive tension dilutes slightly with fewer ships sailing the board and less urgency during island auctions.
The replayability of Container is remarkably high without relying on modern design tropes like variable setups, asymmetric powers, or random event cards. Variety stems directly from high player interaction and group psychology in any given game. Because supply, demand, and actual commodity values depend entirely on decisions, prices, and bids set at the table, no two plays ever feel the same.
Let’s discuss production. Mercury Games’ 10th Anniversary Edition goes over the top with components, featuring massive resin ships heavy enough to act as weapons, and intricately detailed containers. Cardboard components have solid thickness and punch, and money cards work fine—though player screens and poker chips would have been far more practical, particularly for blind bidding (removing the need for bluff cards). The rulebook is well-structured and leaves no room for ambiguity.
As for artwork, the 10th Anniversary Edition opts for a functional, industrial aesthetic leaning into 3D-rendered, photorealistic visuals. The cover depicts a warm, stylized harbor sunset that provides decent ambiance, though that painterly tone fades on the game board. Player boards and the center map utilize technical, almost schematic layouts with saturated tones and clean geometric icons designed to streamline logistics reading. Overall, it’s a understated look in service of the economic mechanics.

It’s worth highlighting Allplay’s edition, which rescues this classic from obscurity with a fresh look and a far more accessible scale while introducing minor mechanical tweaks to streamline play. Key additions include adjustments for shorter, punchier games, the option to reset prices as a main action, and tweaks to the Investment Bank. These thoughtful additions modernize the design without compromising its spirit.
And let’s wrap this up. Container is an exercise in pure economic design centered around the production, transport, and sale of goods in a closed player-driven market. Interdependency when setting prices, paired with relentless speculation during island auctions, creates a psychological tension as captivating as it is punishing. Maintaining monetary balance requires shared responsibility; a single misstep or unchecked greed can choke out liquidity and send the game into financial collapse. Yet, when the table masters these demanding mechanics and capital moves freely, an elegant macroeconomic simulation emerges.
